I think of marketing as my “super-power”.
When I create a new marketing project or campaign and it works well – really well – I feel like I’m Supergirl and I’ve just flown my client up, into the sky, and brought them safely to a new mountain top. I’ve hyper-leaped into the super world and I’ve used my powers for good.
Ok. That may sound strange. Let me put it another way. Have you seen Simon Sinek’s TEDtalk video about “finding your why?” I’ve seen it many times and each time it hits me just a little differently. This most recent viewing I thought about me – what MY why is – instead of my client’s why.
I have never shared my WHY. So, here’s the big “reveal”:
I do marketing to make a difference – even a small difference in a big world. I feel that my “calling” is to use my gifts of business knowledge and understanding to help my clients actually do better – to help them increase their revenues – through the use of marketing.
Maybe that’s why I love strategy – because it has to do with aligning marketing goals with business goals. But I’m not a marketing expert who “loves marketing.” No, I use marketing as a tool – or a combination of many tools – to help my clients grow and to realize their visions and dreams.
I use marketing as my “super power” to help move businesses forward. It’s a means to an end, not an end in-and-of itself. Maybe that’s why I feel unimpressed or unphased with all the changes that happen, literally, on a daily basis in digital marketing. There will always be new platforms, new channels, new ways to tag and share and like and send and video and buy.
But not matter how much, or how fast, it all changes, marketing is a super-power with one goal and only one goal – business success. It’s always a means to an end.
That’s also why I don’t let myself get distracted, or down in the weeds, with “today’s viral video” or the coolest new way to add a filter to your feed. I’m here for the big picture – my eyes are up, on that big prize in the sky.
And if you look up into the air, really carefully, you’ll see me flying there with my red cape, using my x-ray vision and supersonic hearing to find the next company I can swoop down and help!
Now tell me about you. What’s your why?
