How can companies do a better job of hiring Gen Z – per AI?
Hiring and retaining Gen Z workers is a large issue for many organizations, so I put the question (the title to this post) to Perplexity AI, and I was pleased and a bit surprised at the response. It tells me:
- There’s good information online already (in addition to what I’ve been writing)
- It’s not complicated or a “black box” – there are logical steps that any organization can do
- All of these actions are important; it’s important not to do one or two and think you’re done
Why aren’t organizations having more success? In my experience, it’s because they don’t have the leadership on board to make these changes or they don’t know where and how to begin (my previous blog post was about creating better job descriptions, for example).
Here’s what AI offered as better ways to hire Gen Z workers:
“To effectively recruit and hire Gen Z workers, companies need to adapt their strategies to align with this generation’s unique preferences and values. Here are key approaches to improve Gen Z hiring:
- Embrace Digital and Social Media
Gen Z is the first truly digital-native generation, so companies must leverage technology in their recruitment efforts:
– Optimize career websites and application processes for mobile devices
– Utilize social media platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok to showcase company culture and job openings
– Implement AI-driven chatbots for quick responses to initial inquiries
B. Prioritize Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)
Gen Z strongly values diversity and inclusion in the workplace:
– Actively implement and promote DEI initiatives
– Showcase a diverse workforce in recruitment materials and social media
– Create an inclusive company culture that celebrates individuality
C. Offer Flexibility and Work-Life Balance
Gen Z prioritizes flexibility and work-life balance:
– Provide remote and hybrid work options
– Offer flexible work hours and schedules
– Implement wellness programs and mental health initiatives
D. Emphasize Career Growth and Development
Gen Z values continuous learning and career advancement:
– Offer training programs, mentorship opportunities, and clear career paths
– Focus on skills-based hiring rather than traditional credentials
– Provide opportunities for professional growth and advancement
E. Streamline the Hiring Process
Gen Z expects a quick and efficient recruitment experience:
– Aim for a hiring process that takes no more than two weeks
– Utilize video interviews and other digital tools to speed up the process
– Maintain frequent communication throughout the hiring journey
F. Highlight Company Values and Social Responsibility
Gen Z seeks purpose-driven work and socially responsible employers:
– Clearly communicate the company’s mission and value
– Showcase corporate social responsibility initiatives
– Demonstrate commitment to sustainability and social causes
G. Offer Competitive Compensation and Benefits
While not the only factor, compensation remains important to Gen Z:
– Provide competitive salaries and transparent pay information
– Offer comprehensive benefits packages, including retirement plans
– Consider unique perks that appeal to Gen Z, such as student loan assistance
By implementing these strategies, companies can significantly improve their ability to attract, engage, and hire top Gen Z talent, creating a workforce that is diverse, dynamic, and prepared for the future.”
Of course, once you hire them, you have to figure out how to best utilize their talents, motivate them, and retain them. And I wrote a book about all that!
